Only the Holy See God

Without holiness, no one will see the Lord!

Without holiness, no one will see the Lord! Our Lord told us “the pure in heart will see God!”  How could this be?  God is everywhere!  We see Him in a rose and the face of our children. We see Him in the beautiful things all around us and we still do not see Him?  This is hard to believe, but it is what our Lord and His followers have told us down through the centuries.  There is one thing about it, either they were deceived, or we are not seeing the Lord God of Glory, Who is standing in plain view, in the way they wanted us to see Him.  Is it possible to have someone as big as God standing before us clothed in His creation and in His Word, and still not really see Him?  If we are not seeing Him, what are we seeing that we think is God? What is it about holiness that makes it possible for us to see the true and Living God in all of His glory?  Why is it so important that we see God in this way today?  Who can see God in this way?  I want to see God’s loving face, but why do I have to be holy to see His gracious, loving face?

What does it mean to see God?

What does it mean to see God?  There is one thing certain; it does not mean a casual look at God—just to know Him as a historical figure like you would know a past president.  It does not mean knowing God from secondhand information.  You may know all about Him and still not know Him.  To see God’s face is to have His approval.  It is for Him to be well pleased with you.  It is to have all of His blessings upon you.  It means to know Him in a loving, personal way.  It means to have a Father-son or Father-daughter bond with Him.  It is to be a friend of God.

Is it possible to see God and not see Him?

Is it possible to see God and not see Him?  This seems like a paradox.  How could we see God and not see Him?  To see God in the way He wants us to see Him we must know Him personally.  It is possible to see God in the creeds, in the sermons, in the songs and still not see Him in the daily decisions of your life.  It is possible that you can be a good member in a good church and still never really see God.  You can have head knowledge of God without a heart-felt union with Him.

If we are not seeing God, then what are we seeing that we think is God?

If we are not seeing God, then what are we seeing that we think is God?  This is a hard question to answer.  There are many things we see that we think are God.  It may be an emotional high.  Some people go to church to “get blessed.” If they go away from church with a good feeling, they think God was in the church meeting.  Or, it could be you are only seeing a historical God.  A historical God cannot help or hurt us.  There is no personal, friendly relationship with this “god.”  If you do not have a God that can help you in your time of need, he is not the God of the Bible.

What is it about holiness that makes it possible for me to see God in all of His glory?

What is it about holiness that makes it possible for me to see God in all of His glory?  If we are not living a holy life, we are impure.  God has “not called us into uncleanness, but unto holiness.” In such a state, we are at war with God.  There is an element in us that will not love God.  Worse than this, if you do not love God, you hate Him.  You do not want to see His face.  It is only when this disposition is removed from your life, are you able to see God’s face.  God will not associate with people that hate Him.  When you live a holy life, you have this disposition removed from you. You then love God with all your heart, mind, soul and strength.  This enables you to love your neighbor and your fellow Christians as yourself.

Why is it so important to see God today?

Why is it so important to see God today?  May people feel they do not need God today!  Some feel a faith in God keeps them from being “successful” in their dealings with people.  They feel to know God would weaken them to the point of making them helpless to defend themselves when they are wronged by others.  They feel being a loving servant of God would take away their individuality.  They feel they would be nothing but robots.

This is farthest from the truth!  We can only be at our best when we have God’s best for us.  God has a wonderful plan for each of us that can only be realized when we are in close communion with Him.   To see God’s face is to receive every good and perfect gift from God—which enables us to be everything we can be in our daily encounters with God, others and ourselves.  We will not be robots.  Each of us has special gifts from God to help us be at our best.  If we only see God as an unjust judge, we are not seeing the God I am talking about in this article.  We see another god, which is the devil, the god of this world.  We need to see God today so we can rise above the sin that is dragging us down to the depths of the moral and spiritual destruction that we find ourselves in today.

Who can see God?

Who can see God?  Only those who are willing to go God’s way are going to see God.  Those who are willing to let God cleanse them from all sin His way will see Him.  No others will ever see God in this life or the next.  If you are willing to humble yourself under the mighty hand of God, you can see God now and forever!

I want to see God’s gracious, loving face, but why do I have to be holy to do so?

I want to see God’s gracious, loving face, but why do I have to be holy to do so? Why can I not live the way I please and still have the approval of God?  The answer to this question is easy!  If we love God, we will keep His commandments.  God has said, “be holy, for I am holy.”  This is a direct command.  To not do this is to rebel against God.  You cannot see God’s face when you are “kicking and scratching” at Him.  To see God’s gracious, loving face you must first turn from your sins and accept Jesus Christ—the Second Person of the Holy Trinity—as your Lord and Savior.  Next, you must give your whole life to God so He can cleanse you from all sin and fill you with His Holy Spirit, the Third Person of the Holy Trinity. This is called being “filled or baptized with the Holy Spirit.”  It is evidenced by the fruit of the Spirit that is explained in Galatians 5. When you do this, God’s love will be “shed abroad in your heart” by God’s Holy Spirit. This transaction brings you into a gracious, loving relationship with your Heavenly father that enables you to be at your best.  It enables you to live the way God created you to live.  There is no other way.  Only the pure in heart will see God.  Only those who “follow peace with all men and holiness” will see God in this life or the next!
